Testing of the welds are carried out using a 24”x4½” vacuum box. The weld to be inspected was first coated with a lightly brushed application of liquid soap.
A vacuum box was then applied and the air inside pumped out.
With the aid of a flashlight shone through, the Perspex cover of the vacuum box was carefully inspected for signs of leaks, which if present would be indicated by air bubbles in the liquid soap. This method of testing was carried out on both the starboard and the port side tanks, both of which proved sound. It is strongly recommended that all of the welded thru hulls fittings should also be proved with a vacuum box, or a dye penetrant where the vacuum box would not fit.
